‘Daggers in the back’: Netflix, home of the sequels, is still fighting for the rights of the first episode

Almost $ 500 million has been invested by Netflix in the sequels to “Daggers in the back” and now it turns out that, months after the premiere of the second chapter, the first is still in the hands of Lionsgate. The North American journalist Matthew Beloni tells it in a piece on the aforementioned platform which, in addition to deepening the restructuring that caused the departure of one of the company’s top management, Tendo Nagenda; ensures that the offer for the rights to the original film, directed by Daniel Craig, is not close to being realized.

Apparently Lionsgate, a studio that signs other great hits such as the ‘John Wick’ saga; he is not too open in negotiations with Netflix. And it is that we remember him, after taking charge of the production of that first film that surprised so much for its box office receipts and ended up taking on an Oscar nomination in the Best Original Screenplay category for its director and screenwriter Rian Johnson; Lionsgate lost the offer for which Netflix seemed to have no limits. According to rumors, the platform spent 469 million for two continuations which would translate into a generous salary of 100 million for both Johnson and Craig.

The surprising thing is that no deal was also closed so that said streaming mainstay could include “Daggers in the Back” in its catalog. Now, ahead of a sequel set for December 23 this year, viewers who haven’t seen the first film they don’t have a chance to catch up and enjoy a new adventure from a single platform. Currently in Spain, the film which boasted a cast led by Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Toni Collette or Christopher Plummer, is available on HBO Max.

Roller coaster

According to Rian Johnson himself, “Daggers in the back: The mystery of the Glass Onion” is like “a roller coaster, not a crossword”, a description through which the aforementioned director intends to “warn” viewers that this sequel will not have much to do with the original. Of course, despite the differences, ‘Glass Onion’ presents the return of Benoit Blanchound who dives into his second case after receiving an invitation that prompts him to solve the mysterious murder that took place on an island.

According to the official synopsis, “Benoit travels to Greece to unravel a mystery involving a new heterogeneous group of suspects. The sequel will follow a tech billionaire, played by Edward Norton, who invites some of his friends for a vacation to his private island. Obviously someone ends up dead and it’s up to Detective Benoit Blanc to solve the murder.”. The film completes the cast with Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.
