Over the weekend, the Disney Channel premiered Hamster and Gretel from Dan Povenmire (Phineas and Ferb). Disney Channel was also kind enough to send me the first two episodes to watch. I was thankful that I don’t have the cable. As the show officially premiered with new episodes on Saturdays at 9:30 am ET / PT, I thought I’d share my thoughts on the first two episodes. If you’re like me and don’t have the cable, you can watch the first 5 episodes on Disney + starting August 17th!
-
Episode 101 “Empower Failure / Oakey Dokey”
-
“Empower Failure” – Hamster and Gretel gain superpowers from aliens while Kevin grapples with being “adjacent superheroes”.
-
“Oakey Dokey” – Kevin and Gretel disagree on how to stop a meteor.
-
-
Episode 102 “Recipe for Disaster / Math Punch”
-
“Recipe for Disaster” – Kevin and Gretel must save the family dinner.
-
“Math Punch” – Gretel faces off against a lightning-fast cowboy as Dave struggles to get Carolina the perfect anniversary gift.

Two episodes are not enough to judge an entire series. I usually give a show 3-5 episodes before deciding whether to continue. However, I will say that if you like Povenmire’s other works like Phineas and Ferb And Milo Murphy’s lawyou will probably love Hamster and Gretel. They are new characters, a new plot, a new location, etc. but the feeling is the same. It looks like his work and has the same charm and humor as his other shows. I personally like this a lot. It’s great family entertainment that I sometimes turn on even when my kids aren’t home.
As I said, I’ve only seen two episodes and they are the first two. This means that we are still establishing characters and relationships. Kevin has to learn how to be the big brother of a superhero, Gretel is learning about super powers and when to use them, and Hamster hasn’t had much time yet. I am definitely excited to watch the first 5 episodes later this week and would recommend watching them too. It’s good fun for families who don’t feel numb.
“Hamster & Gretel” features Kevin and his younger sister Gretel, who are about to receive superpowers from space aliens. But something goes wrong and it’s Gretel and her pet hamster (named Hamster) who suddenly have new skills. Now, protective older brother Kevin must figure out how to partner with both Gretel and her pet hamster to protect their city from mysterious dangers.
Hamster and Gretel stars Meli Povenmire like Gretel, Michele Cimino (With love, Vittorio) like Kevin, Beck Bennett (SNL) as a hamster, Joey King (Kissing booth) like Fred, Matt Jones (Bob Hearts Abishola) like Dave, e Carolina Ravassa (Maya and the Three) like Carolina. If you have the cable, you can watch new episodes every Saturday at 9:30 am ET / PT.
