Thomas Janeis the 2004 film The Punisher it was a great adaptation of the comic and the character. That movie was directed by Jonathan Gallinaand it was a brutal, intense and action-packed film that told a great story of dark revenge.
We know there have been a few sequels to the film that have been presented to Marvel previously Punisher: War zone was made by the director Lexi Alessandro. Jane was replaced in that film as Frank Castle from Ray Stevenson.
Jane recently revealed this Rob Zombie actually launched one of those sequels. In a recent interview with CB, the actor shared:
“There have been a couple of iterations of Punisher 2. One of them was directed by Rob Zombie, which I thought would be interesting. But that was an iteration. We were fighting over script ideas and trying to find a new director. People at Marvel wanted to go with a different director, and it was their choice, so it was like, ‘Who’s that person going to be?’ “
When Zombie was turned down as a director, Marvel ended up doing it John Dahlthe director of the ’98 Rounders and 2001 Joy laughs. He was in talks to direct the sequel, but dropped out. According to Jane, the sequel “crossed different types of people”, including “immense talent” Walter Hill (Difficult times, 48 hours).
The actor described Hill as a “ no frills, great action [director], but cheap, poor dialogue, had a great sense of humor but was really good with action. He’s a man’s director, right? “Jane went on to say:
“We met, fell in love with each other and went to the studio. Walter said, ‘I’ll write it, direct it, and that’s it.’ They ended up saying no to Walter Hill for reasons beyond my ability to understand. That’s when I said, ‘If you’re not going to do the perfect Punisher movie with the perfect guy, so who else do you have? ‘ They floated another playmaker who hadn’t actually done anything on that baseball field, and so that’s when I had to retire. I had to say, ‘Listen, I’m not sure you guys really understand what you’re doing. Therefore, the chances of ruining this are quite high. “
Jane explained that she wanted to adapt the ’86 Punisher: Circle of Blood, Steven GrantThe five-issue storyline that puts the Punisher in jail. But it is an idea that “they never got very far”. He explained:
“Circle of blood it is, in essence, that the Punisher is arrested and thrown into the penitentiary. And every guy in there wants to kill him because he helped put all these guys away. He was going to the lions’ den and of course he just went there on purpose because he was looking for this guy who was hopeless, so he got pushed aside to hunt down these guys. I thought, ‘We can have so much fun doing it.’ But that’s the best we’ve gotten with that. “
It was going to be a tough Punisher movie! It’s a shame it never happened. As for the director, it’s not possible that Rob Zombie would have been able to effectively make a Punisher film. He is not a very good director. However, Walter Hill would make a Badass Punisher movie! It’s kind of crazy that Marvel turned him down!
I would have loved to have seen Thomas Jane continue making Punisher films during that time. He was great in the role! But I also enjoyed it a lot Jon Bernthal’takes the character and it will be great to see him return to the role in the MCU.
