There is a big hit inside Jordan Peelis the new movie No involving a motorcycle clearly inspired by the iconic motorcycle shot Akira. It was a fun little Easter egg and it’s pretty clear that Peele is a huge Akira fan. He actually was working on a live-action adaptation of Akira at some point in his career of him.
In Nostar Keke Palmer is seen riding a motorcycle through her ranch before pulling off the Akira bike slide soon. It’s a great shot and Jordan Peele recently talked about it in an interview with CinemaBlend and explains what it means:
“I mean, that movie meant so much to me. And yes, there is a moment when we do the famous motorcycle, the Kaneda motorcycle.
“It was so beautiful, and it was – it’s a moment that has been paid tribute many times in animation, and I hadn’t seen it done this way. And so having something about having a black woman on a white motorcycle. with, you know, after breaking the police tape that did ‘Akira slide’, it just looked like ‘You know what Jordan? Give it a go.’ ”
So there are definitely some layers added to what Peele was trying to do with this shot. I watched No over the weekend one night while at Comic-Con, but I didn’t like it. Maybe it was because I was so damn tired when I saw it. I may have to give it a second viewing, but my reaction to the first viewing was that this was not Peele’s best movie and I walked out of the theater feeling disappointed.
You have seen No? What do you think about the movie? What are your thoughts on the Akira do I shoot?
