From “The Minions” to “Gru, my favorite villain”: the complete saga of our favorite villain, from worst to best

From “The Minions” to “Gru, my favorite villain”: the complete saga of our favorite villain, from worst to best

It was the year 2010 when the animated cinema welcomed with open arms a group of characters who, in a way as unexpected as energetic, began to become a phenomenon since its arrival in the genre. On the one hand, Gru, an old-school villain with his own evil plan corresponding to which three orphaned girls ended up stealing his heart until he brought out all the tenderness and affection that lived behind his facade.

And on the other hand, of course, the Minions, a clear example of secondary specialists in stealing any and all scenes in which they appeared without mercy or compassion. Elevated to the category of iconic characters, these yellow minions of incomprehensible language and hilarious clumsiness they managed to become, on many occasions, the real stars of the show. And in all honesty.

From “The Minions” to “Gru, my favorite villain”: the complete saga of our favorite villain, from worst to best

The main problem with “Gru 2. Despicable Me” is that it was two films in one. On the one hand, Gru is an impossible plot embraced in the genre of romantic comedy. On the other hand, the Minions and their hilarious physical gags, pure farce. The sections with the latter worked wonderfully, even if at times they gave the feeling of being pressed for the need to prepare the ground for the spin off that was being prepared, but the story with Gru in the forefront has never found that magic, that emotion, that originality it meant.

We could sum it up in the fact that we are dealing with a film whose moments of greatest dramatic substance take place in a shopping center but it would be too simple. Like your (non-existent) argument. Having lost the element of surprise, one could only applaud the courage and risks taken. Even if the results were not up to par.

Of course, the heads of Illumination Entertainment couldn’t have imagined a better start to the study than they got with “Despicable Me”. Critics have surrendered at his feet, despite the surprise factor and expectations with which they approached the film had a lot to do with this, and the audience is completely enthusiastic about this evil boss forced to take care of three orphan girls laden with extra doses of tenderness. The story, despite not carrying anything new under its arm, was expertly told and made sure that the viewer did not get bored at any time, always keeping a complicit smile in front of what happens on the screen. However, It is convenient to focus on the great discovery of this first installment of Gru: The Minions. With capital letters. A real find in the form of memorable characters who have turned each of their gags into a top-notch comic bomb. They made a difference. And they contributed significantly to the brutal success of “Despicable Me”.

‘The Minions’, proposed by Kyle Balda, also author of the underrated ‘Lorax: In search of the lost truffle’, and Pierre Coffin, one of the creators of the Gru universe since its origins, was able to understand the personality and charisma of its protagonists and , after a delusional prologue, full of gags that work like a clockwork mechanism, he is completely immersed in an adventure of robberies, villains, gadget inspectors and frantic chases. The leap to England at the end of the sixties brought a pop spirit, yielded to the popular wink, which transformed the proposal into a refreshing mix of indie gags and overwhelming action scenes which offered little respite to the viewer of any age.

Because the little ones had a great time with the charming head trio consisting of Kevin, Stuart and Bob, but even the older ones found fun without more aspiration than having fun. Decidedly, what looked like a spin off designed exclusively for the sale of millions of dolls, something it got, ended up being the studio’s most satisfying surprise as well.

Two “Crane 3. Despicable Me”

After the overwhelming commercial results obtained with its first two episodes, ‘Gru 3. My favorite villain’ arrived on the billboards with a guaranteed success at the box office, thanks above all to some characters inserted in the fanaticism of children. However, surprise, this third installment turns out to be the best episode of films starring Gru in its adult version. And with considerable distance from its two predecessors. The main reason? That those in charge didn’t work on autopilot. If so, it would have been impossible to model memorable creations like Balthazar Bratt, the true villain of the story and one of the most successful characters in the trilogy. Just for him, ‘Gru 3. Despicable Me’ more than deserves this silver medal.

1 “Minions: The Origin of Gru”

If all the gags thrown by this fast-paced “Minions: The Origin of Gru” don’t work, it’s very close. From laughter to laughter passes the new installment of a saga that, more than surprisingly, seems to improve film after film. On this occasion, it’s impossible not to fall at the feet of both a little Crane full of charisma and charm, and some really funny Minions in their famous ability to embrace nonsense. Oh, and not forgetting “The Savage Six”, a group of authentic golden helpers.

In short, ‘Minions: The Origin of Gru’, is a total fun, an extraordinarily high level of entertainment that, in addition to making us want more, becomes in itself the best movie in this particular universe.
