Winona Ryder has had an expansive career that spanned decades, starting in the 1980s with classic films Luca, Cockroach juiceAnd heatherand then moved to the 90s when he made it Edward scissor hands, Bites of realityAnd Girl interrupted.
The 90s were also when she got her two Oscar nominations The age of innocence And Little Women. She went on to play so many other memorable roles, but her time as a teenage actor coming of age in the 1980s is what helped her and her castmates the most in her most recent iconic role of Joyce Byers in hit series Stranger things.
In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar (via IndieWire), Ryder’s co-star and friend, Davide Portowho plays Hopper, said of his behind-the-scenes knowledge:
“She would have told him [The Duffer Bros.]”This song actually came out in 85, and you got it in 83″, He knew all these minutes, little details they didn’t even know, and they had to change things in the script based on that … It’s just epic how wild his mind is and how it goes into all these different corners.
Ryder then talked about how he might relate to boys, whose careers took off at such a young age:
“I want the kids to understand, this doesn’t happen. This is very unusual. And I always tell them: ‘Work is the reward!’ Because when I was that age, it was so difficult to enjoy the fruits of my labor. This business is brutal. You work constantly, but if you want to take a break, they tell you: “If you slow down, it will stop.” And then it slowed down. So you are feeling: ‘It will be impossible to go back’. And then that changes to “You’re not even part of the conversation”. For example, it was brutal. “
According to Ross DufferRyder’s mentoring was essential for the show’s up-and-coming teen Millie Bobby Brown. He explained:
“[Winona has] spoke to the guys about what stardom is like and what the press can be like and about the anxiety and confusion that comes with stardom. I think she really helped them. I know you helped Millie specifically [Bobby Brown] a lot to work on. And it’s something no one else can help, really, because so few people have experienced it. It’s not something I understand. It’s not something that, you know, not even a parent would understand. “
Ryder just seems like such an asset and a great all-around person to be around. I hope he’s one of those to be released alive in part 2 of season 4’s Stranger thingsnow available on Netflix.
