WICKED singer-songwriter Stephen Schwartz talks about why the film adaptation needs to be split into two parts

Two months ago, it was announced that the film version of the hit Broadway musical Evil it would be divided into two parts. This caused many people to respond by wondering why it was necessary. I’ve seen the musical on stage many times, and I never thought it was extremely long or that it would take several hours to tell, but now we have a little more understanding of why this decision was made.

In a recent written statement for fan newsletter The Schwartz Scene, the show’s songwriter, Stefano Schwartzexplained the main reason for the split, which is due to how it was written, i.e. due to the end of Act I:

“We found it very difficult to get through ‘Defying Gravity’ without a break. That song was written specifically to bring the curtain down, and any scene that followed without interruption just seemed extremely disappointing. “

He continued by adding:

“The truth is, we’ve been trying to make a movie out of it for a while, even though it was supposed to be a very long movie. But we continued to run into two problems. The first is that, even being a very long single film, it required us to cut or omit things that we wanted to include and that we think fans of the show and the story will appreciate. So, for those two reasons, in addition to the excitement of doing something that had never been done before with a musical, we decided to make two films. Of course, when it’s all over, if it doesn’t work that way, we’ll have to find a solution. But we firmly believe this is what’s best for our story, our show and our fans. “

Does this make sense. The song “Defying Gravity” is the show’s biggest song, and it’s always natural to take a break before getting back into the story. I’m excited about the films and can’t wait to see how they turn out.

The films will be directed by Jon M. Chuand are set up to act Cinzia Erivo like Elfaba e Ariana Grande like Glinda. The two films will be released on December 25, 2024 and December 25, 2025.
