Oscar-winning actor Christian Bale (The fighter, The American hustle and bustle, Vice) is known for the dramatic roles he has played throughout his career. From 2005 to 2012, he played the role of Batman in the Dark Knight trilogy, and while a superhero role seemed a little out of character for the actor, it was a serious achievement with an acclaimed director and a sizeable budget for the big screen. He threw him out of the park and went back to some of the deep roles he was used to. So he was surprising to some when we saw that he was destined to return to the superhero lore in the MCU Thor: Love and thunder.
Speaking with Screen Rant about the reasons he played the role, Bale explained:
“For me, it was Taika. I loved ‘Thor: Ragnarok’, as well as my family. We also all loved ‘Jojo Rabbit’, and then I worked with Natalie [Portman, on Terrence Malick’s ‘Knight of Cups’] and I wanted to work with Tessa [Thompson] and with Chris [Hemsworth]. This is it, really. I just said, ‘Great!’ I liked the script, I liked Taika’s description of the villain. ‘Let’s go do this.’ “
But it almost didn’t happen. The busy actor nearly had to backtrack due to scheduling conflicts, but his kids made it clear:
“There were some potential scheduling conflicts. I said to my family, ‘I don’t think it’s going to work,’ and they said, ‘No, make it work. You’re doing it, Dad.’ They gave me the marching orders and I obeyed diligently. “
Thank you, Christian Bale’s children! Thor: Love and thunder will be released in theaters next weekend, July 8th!
