“Only murders in the building,” which no doubt was one of the biggest surprises of the series last season, aims to keep up with the world of streaming. With a new proposition that mixes the classic Agatha Christie mystery with a growing passion for crime podcasts, this television drama that can be seen in Spain on Disney +, has managed to become a phenomenon.

Behind its germ is John Hoffman and Steve Martin, a simple idea that wins from the hand of three magnificent protagonists, 100% millennial humor, a crisp script and a protagonist setting like the trio of detectives that inhabit it. The Arconia, home of Charles, Oliver and Mabel, is one of those toppings that gets fat and reveals a new ace up its sleeve for the future. a second season that must replicate the success of the first, having lost the element of surprise.
“I think in Season 2 you have to have some of what made the first work if you can figure out what the key is, of course, and you also have to find a new approach, a new story and new characters. Eventually you juggle or search for the perfect mix to try to incorporate new elements, while retaining the essence of the first season.”says Martino. Next to him, even remotely, are Martin Short and Selena Gomez, performers who did not expect the success of ‘Only murders in the palace’. Short says he doesn’t think you can ever count on it, that you have “the hope” but it is very difficult to predict.
“Probably the biggest hit of my career!”Martin adds. “It’s not a joke, it’s like KHÉ ?? I don’t obsess about that success because there’s no way to know, they don’t tell you, they just tell you ‘it’s very popular!'”. In this regard, the co-creator of the series, in addition to being the protagonist, stress that you have to trust the feedback that comes to youand tells a funny anecdote he shared with a fan to highlight the extent to which “Only Murders in the Building” gained popularity.
The keys to the case
Martin, Short and Gomez adapted to their comic dynamics as they headed into the second season of “Only Murders In The Building”, something given by experience. Also thanks to their evolution as a team, they changed the way they work, especially on a key point: how much everyone knew from the first episode.
“When we shot the first season I didn’t know who the killer was until the end of the series, so it was a surprise”Gomez recalls having revealed that this season has already gone in other directions. “[Con la segunda] we knew where we were going, which of course it comes in handy when you build your role around it”.
“When they give us the scripts, they don’t give them all, so in the first season I didn’t know who he was …”adds Short, disagreeing with his partner about the “usefulness” of having more information. “In the second season we knew, but I don’t think this affects the card”. Well, the same does not affect but “it’s more fun to know, of course”says Gomez.
