The Spanish box office also offers surprises, again very good for Universal Pictures’ dinosaurs and pretty bad for Pixar’s space ranger. In general, the 20 highest-grossing films of the weekend grossed just € 4.5m, a much stronger drop than expected taking into account theatrical films and a heat wave for which theaters’ air conditioning would be was an oasis. Just over 670,000 viewers opted for that oasis, according to Comscore data, 244,000 fewer than the previous week.

As it happened in the United States, “Jurassic World: Dominion” held up to the premiere of “Lightyear” much better than expected, managing to stay in first position. In addition, it does so with € 2.27 million more, an excellent figure even if it represents a 50% drop compared to the weekend of its premiere. Again, with the competition it has had, it’s fantastic that it averaged € 6,000 per cinema and an average of € 2,780 per screen. Its total is € 9.57 million, so at this rate it will become the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing “Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness”, which currently has 12.95 million. But it is extremely difficult for him to deal with the 22 and 23 million euros that “Jurassic World” and “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” were earning in their day.
‘Lightyear’ also plays its premiere in Spain, debuting with € 1.24 million. It is the tenth best premiere of the year, but it is the worst debut of a Pixar film in our country. His average wasn’t bad (€ 3,000 per cinema), but it sounds pretty disappointing for two heavyweights like Pixar and Disney. We have already recently analyzed what could have happened when it indicated certain success. A possible tiredness of the saga, which the public knows will arrive on Disney + as part of the subscription in a few weeks, that the reviews have not been as positive as it usually happens with other films of the studio … Being an animated film and for the familiar audience has the potential to continue to build up over the next few days and throughout the summer, but with “Minions: The Origin of Gru” coming in two weeks, it won’t be easy to return.
Tom Cruise is still holding on
“Top Gun: Maverick” continues to surprise in its fourth week, adding € 547,082 to reach a total of € 6.49 million at the moment. It continues away from the phenomenon that is happening in North America, but it’s holding up fantastically here too, down just 28% from the previous weekend. You will still have rope in at least the first half of the summer.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” falls one place and adds 111,301 euros to the 12.95 million euros that consolidate it as the highest-grossing film of the year, until the dinosaurs catch up with it.
Nicolas Cage manages to sneak into the top 5 with ‘The unbearable weight of a huge talent’, which grossed 67,055 in its first weekend with a limited release (112 copies). Its average is 600 euros per cinema, which is acceptable considering the other films.
Surprising also “The kitchen brigade”, which in a limited preview reached the sixth position and received 38,282 euros. It was the preferred option of this cut, because “We are made to understand each other” seemed to have the same number of copies and was in position number 14. “You must come and see it”, with only 26 copies, is at number 16 with a ‘ excellent average for a film of 629 euros.
The big franchises rest next weekend, but not the big previews. Universal Pictures releases new horror film Scott Derrickson, “Black Phone”. Warner Bros. brings Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis”. And on a more independent level, we have novelties like ‘Tehran’s Law’, ‘A love in Scotland’, ‘Promises in Paris’ or ‘An unexpected mess’.
