You can’t tell the Elvis Presley story without Priscilla, the young woman he met when he was stationed in Germany and who would become his wife and mother to his daughter, Lisa Marie. Baz Luhrmann cast Olivia DeJonge for her role in “Elvis,” which hits theaters June 24. DeJonge dared to enter his grandparents’ oven in “The Visit”, meet William Shakespeare in “Will” and enroll in a teenage dystopia in “The Society”. We can also see her in HBO Max’s hit “The Staircase”. But nothing like being directed by Baz Luhrmann and ending up receiving a twelve-minute ovation at the Cannes Film Festival: “It was so good. They just didn’t stop!” He tells us with enthusiasm.
The actress explains that “Elvis” is a film that will surprise those who expect the typical musical biopic: “First, because it’s a Baz Luhrmann film, so you know there’s going to be something bold in there. And second, for the way he portrays America in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s”. One of the things she liked the most was taking a tour of the fashion of those decades and, above all, showing off Priscilla’s huge hairstyles: “It looked like I had another head on top of mine” he says funny.
He couldn’t meet Priscilla before shooting
Although Priscilla Presley gave her blessing to the film and recently got heavily involved in the promotion, attending the premiere at Cannes or being Austin Butler’s partner at the Met gala, DeJonge didn’t get the chance to meet her before filming. But he doesn’t mind that COVID ruined a possible previous encounter: “Looking back, I think it was for the best”. It stands out from her “her most combative part. I learned a lot from her”. She wants to explore the turbulent parts of her marriage to Presley a little more.

But she is very proud of the film to the point of admitting it gave her “a little panic attack” when he saw her for the first time. “But in the end I was very excited. I was relieved and happy because it’s a fantastic movie. I can’t wait for it to come out so I can talk about it.”. You won’t have to wait long because June 24 arrives in theaters.
