The Native American Media Association announced that it is accepting applications for the Fifth Native American Film Writers Lab. This is a 10-week show aired online between September and November 2022 and funded by COMCAST NBCUniversal, the Cherokee Nation Film Office, and A+E Networks.
“This lab has been an incredible resource for a variety of studios that need Native American literary talent,” said Ian Skorodin, director of strategy for the Native American Media Alliance. “Film is endless, and we want our community of indigenous writers to be a big part of this art form in the future.”
Native American Feature Writers Lab caters to the needs of the entertainment industry. Native Americans make up 0.8% of “nearly underrepresented” screenwriters, according to a 2020 report by the Writers Guild of America. This program will provide a new opportunity for Indian-American writers who want to enter the entertainment industry and reverse existing inequalities.
The Native American Media Alliance will select five Native American writers to participate in the program. The lab consists of daily workshops, screenplay writers and peer sessions. Additionally, attendees will attend a series of events and screenings that will further familiarize themselves with the entertainment industry. The purpose of the lab is to further develop the skills of writers and prepare them for employment in the industry.
The Native American Film Writers Lab was established as part of the Native American Media Association’s mission to improve media portrayals of Indians and increase the number of Native Americans employed in all aspects of the media industry.
The Native American Film Writers Lab is designed for experienced writers who can write feature films. Each selected participant must complete at least one feature film script by the end of the 10-week session, which will be screened at the 16th LA SKINS FEST in November.
The Native American Media Alliance (NAMA) supports the representation of Indians in the entertainment industry. This initiative serves as a resource for industry personnel to work with Native Americans who have a true voice for film, television and new media. The Native American Media Alliance is a project of the Barcid Foundation; A non-profit organization focused on multimedia programming in local communities.
The mission of the Cherokee Nation Film Office is to increase the presence of Native Americans at all levels of the film and television industry while creating economic development and employment in the Cherokee Nation.
The earliest application deadline for the Native American Feature Writers Lab is June 30, 2022 (the regular deadline is July 14, 2022 and the deadline is July 28, 2022). For more information and to apply, visit. name.mediaOr send an email to contact@nama.media.
