James Gunn shares update on CONSTANTINE 2 and location of Keanu Reeves’ DC sequel

Fans have been waiting for almost two decades Constantine 2 will finally happen, and it looks like the long-gestating sequel is still in limbo. Co-Head of DC Studios James Gunn recently shared an update on the status of the film, and while there is movement behind the scenes, it doesn’t seem like anything is set in stone just yet.

During an interview with BobaTalks, Gunn was asked Keanu ReevesRecent comments suggest that a new draft of the Constantine 2 the script exists. Gunn confirmed that although conversations about the project have taken place, he himself has not seen the script.

“I’ve discussed it from time to time. I’ve discussed it with Keanu. So, it’s… I think it’s a great group of guys. I really like all those people. I think they’re talented, but I haven’t read any scripts yet.”

Gunn’s statement follows previous remarks from Reeves, in which he confirmed that the creative team was still actively working to make the sequel a reality. The plan is reportedly to bring the film to DC Studios as an “Elseworlds” project, existing outside of the main continuity of the DC Universe.

The sequel will be seen Francesco Lorenzo return to the director’s chair, with Akiva Goldman write the screenplay and produce. Lawrence previously explained that the project’s delays were largely due to “regime changes” at Warner Bros. and DC Studios in recent years.

Earlier this year, the team finally received approval from DC Studios to move forward with developing a script. Reeves revealed that the story will continue in the same world as the 2005 original, but with a darker twist, teasing that his chain-smoking exorcist will be “tortured even more.”

The first Constantine film, released in 2005, was loosely based on the DC and Vertigo Comics character created by Alan Moore AND Steve Bisette.

The film follows John Constantine, a cynical sorcerer and exorcist who battles supernatural forces to save souls from damnation. In addition to Reeves, the cast included Rachel Weisz, Shia LaBeouf, Tilda Swinton, Djimon HounsouAND Pietro Stormare.

While fans continue to hope Constantine 2Gunn’s comments suggest the project remains in early development. However, the fact that Reeves, Lawrence, and Goldsman are all committed to restoring it is reason enough to be optimistic.

For now, we’ll just have to wait and see if DC Studios will finally give John Constantine another chance on the big screen.
