game of Thrones Creator George R. R. Martin has a very particular dream for HBO’s next Westeros adventure, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Knight Errantas he wants it to contain the best jousting scenes ever filmed.
During his appearance at New York Comic Con, Martin revealed that he gave showrunner Ira Parker a specific challenge when developing the new series, which is based on his beloved Dunk & Egg novels, and had nothing to do with the accuracy of the lore or character arcs.
“I set [the production team] a challenge that I think Ira and his people have accomplished. I said, “Let’s make the best ride sequences that have ever been put on film.” A modest little challenge for Ira and his crew.
To clarify his expectations, Martin cited a surprising reference point, the 1952 classic Ivanhoewhich is a film known for its amazing tournament scenes.
“I think my previous favorite was Ivanhoe from 1952. They don’t have a lot of ride sequences, but the ones they do have are really good. So that’s the standard. You guys will be the judge of how we did. But I think we did really well.”
It’s no secret that Martin is fascinated by medieval tournaments. Rides have always been part of its world-building, but rarely the focus.
“I’ve always loved medieval tournaments in other films and, of course, we had several of them in Game of Thrones. But they were in the background, they weren’t the focus.
“But I said… ‘I want to do something that’s entirely set during a tournament,’ because I found tournaments to be very exciting.”
That passion for steel-on-steel pageantry and spectacle is at the heart of The Errant Knighta story that follows Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, Egg, as they navigate the politics and dangers of a great tournament.
With HBO’s resources and Martin’s old-school filmmaking standards, fans could see some epic and brutal jousting scenes.
We will find out if the challenge was accepted and when A knight of the seven kingdoms will debut on HBO and HBO Max on January 18.
