It seems that fans of Stranger things 2025 could end in a cinema instead of in your living room. Despite previous reports that the Stranger things Season 5 finale reportedly skipping theaters, now it looks like the final chapter of Netflix’s hit series will make its big screen debut.
According to Puck’s What I’m Hearing newsletter, the epic two-hour series finale will premiere at AMC and other theater chains across the United States on New Year’s Eve, the same day it arrives on Netflix.
“I can now report that two hours have passed Stranger things The series finale will debut on AMC and other theater chains on New Year’s Eve, the same day it arrives on Netflix,” the report reads.
This is an important reversal compared to what was stated by Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Beautiful Bajaria said a few days earlier. He seemed to have shelved the idea of a stage series altogether, explaining: “I think releasing it on Netflix gives the fans what they want.”
However, Stranger things creators Matt Duffer AND Ross Duffer have long been open about their desire to give fans a complete cinematic experience. During the same interview, Matt Duffer explained:
“People fail to realize how much time and effort is spent on audio and visuals, and they see them in reduced quality. Most importantly, it’s about experiencing it at the same time with the fans.”
So what exactly happened between that Variety interview and this new report? Puck notes that the conversation with Netflix and the Duffers occurred “weeks ago,” suggesting that internal discussions have evolved since then.
Given the great anticipation surrounding the Stranger things finale, it’s no surprise that Netflix wants to capitalize on the event-level hype by giving it a theatrical push.
While Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed the news yet, a limited theatrical run certainly falls in line with their recent moves. The streamer has been experimenting more with theatrical releases for its high-profile projects, including KPop Demon Hunters AND Guillermo del Toroit is imminent Frankenstein.
Other series have followed a similar path. Earlier this year, the finale of Doctor who The second season is the protagonist Ncuti Gatwa screened in select theaters prior to streaming.
At this point it is not clear whether Stranger things fans outside the US will be able to see the finale on the big screen, or if it’s a domestic-only deal with AMC and other American chains.
Stranger things Season 5 Volume 1 will arrive on November 26, Volume 2 will be released on December 25, and the final episode, now apparently headed to theaters, will arrive on December 31.
If all goes well, that’s it Stranger things it won’t just be a binge-watching event. It will be a cinematic farewell worthy of the Hawkins crew’s last stand.
