X-MEN ’97 has been officially renewed for season 3 while season 2 will arrive on Disney+ in summer 2026

It’s a great time to be a mutant fan. During New York Comic Con, Marvel Studios announced it X-Men ’97 has officially been renewed for season 3. The revival series has been a huge success on Disney+, and season 2 will arrive as early as summer 2026.

Comic Con attendees got an exclusive first look at what comes next for the animated heroes. The trailer revealed the return of the powerful villain Apocalypse, with the X-Men scattered across different points in time.

Iconic characters such as Wolverine, Cyclops, Jean Grey, Jubilee and Nightcrawler will have to fight to return to the 90s after being lost through the ages.

Season 1 of X-Men ’97 it premiered on March 20, 2024, and concluded its ten-episode run on May 15. The show resumed right where the beloved X-Men: The Animated Series by the 1990s it went on hiatus, continuing the story of the mutant team still struggling to coexist in a world that fears them.

The revival has been praised by fans and critics alike for capturing the heart and tone of the original series while expanding its story in new and exciting ways.

At the start of the new series, the X-Men were reeling from the apparent death of Professor Charles Xavier. In his absence, Magneto stepped in to lead the team according to Charles’ final will, only to discover that Xavier was alive and living in the Shi’ar Empire.

His return helped the X-Men defeat Bastion, a deadly hybrid of human and Sentinel technology. But the victory came at a price: the team was scattered over time.

In the finale, Cyclops and Jean Gray were trapped in the year 3960 AD, while Rogue, Beast, Nightcrawler, Charles and Magneto found themselves in ancient Egypt around 3000 BC, where they encountered a young version of Apocalypse.

Fans also had a glimmer of hope that Gambit, who sacrificed himself during a Sentinel battle, might still be alive. And of course, there’s Wolverine’s brutal fate when Magneto ripped the adamantium from his body, setting up some heavy consequences for what happens next.

Behind the scenes, X-Men ’97 has seen some big creative changes. Original head writer Beau De Mayo he was fired by Marvel shortly before the first season premiere, although he completed work on the second season. For the third season, Matthew Chaunceybest known for his work on What If…?, will do the writing.

The voice cast brings classic characters to life, including Ray Chase like Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith like Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann in the role of Thief, Giorgio Buzza like Beast, AJ LoCascio in the role of Gambetto, Holly Chou like Jubilee, Isaac Robinson Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson like Magneto, and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.

With X-Men ’97 Now that we’re officially entering Season 3 and the next installment is set to release in 2026, fans have a lot to look forward to. Mutants are lost to time, old enemies are resurrecting, and the future of mutantkind looks more thrilling than ever.
