This month is great for fans of Batman: the animated series. The revolutionary show aired for the first time on September 5, 1992 and redefined the world of Dark Knight for an entire new generation.
Not only has it removed classic characters such as Batman, Joker and Catwoman, but has also given us new minting which since then have become basic elements of the DC tradition. Joker himself made his animated debut on September 11, 1992 and with him it was a surprise that nobody expected: Harley Quinn. What is wild is that DC initially planned for her to appear only once.
The “Joker’s Favor” episode introduced Harley to the world, and while at the beginning it seemed like a typical Joker story, everything changed when his new partner got on the screen. Fans loved her instantly. But the original intention was that she was nothing more than a gag to throw. As the story tells, the “favor of Joker” could have been the first and last appearance of Harley.
It’s quite wild! Today Harley Quinn, one of the most popular and chaotic anti -heroes in the comics, was almost just a lateral character to an episode. Fortunately, the creators understood what they had in hand. Harley stole the spotlight and soon the DC universe would never have been the same.
When he made his debut, Harley was nothing more than Joker’s breeding. Dressed with its iconic red and black giester costume, blonde under the mask and dubbed by Arleen SkinIt was more a comic nod to the aesthetics of Joker’s clown than anything else. His name, of course, was an intelligent game on “Harlequin”. But the response of the fans was immediate and his role quickly started to evolve.
When he introduced himself to “The Laughing Fish”, Harley had gone from Sidekick to the lover’s interest. That jump came with luggage, since Joker’s and Harley’s relationship has always been toxic.
Even then, the series did not avoid showing how unhealthy their connection was, with Batman who often tried to remove Harley from chaos.
From there, Harley Quinn started branches further Batman: the animated series. Appeared in Batman’s new adventuresIt appeared in DC’s animated films such as Batman Beyond: Return of the JokerAnd slowly he made his way into the comics. In Return of the Joker, We have even seen an older and reformed Harley, complete with grandchildren.
His popularity went up to the stars thanks to the fans, who wanted more than his story. DC delivered an adequate background to Harley, a solo comic race and apparitions in different teams such as Gotham City Sirens, Birds of Prey and Suicide Squad. Over time, it has become less a bad, more anti -hero and a character who could easily bring his adventures.
One of the greatest turning points in Harley’s history came after his final break with Joker. He was not cute, but he gave her the freedom to fully become her person. That freedom also brought his relationship that has long been waiting with Poison Ivy who finally became a canon, which fans were waiting for years to see.
Today Harley Quinn is an electric power plant. He would never have to overcome an episode, but now it is a beloved part of the DC universe. From animation to comics to successful films and multiple live-action portraits, Harley has proven to be here to stay.
Considering how much he resonates with fans, it is sure to say that we will see new versions for decades to come.
