Dakota Johnson He is not holding back when he comes to how he sees the current state of Hollywood and, honestly, he is saying that many creatives and fans of the film, like me, have thought.
While promoting his next film Materialists In the last episode of Hot One, Johnson was asked by the host Sean Evans because Hollywood became so adverse to risk. His response was sincere and harmful:
“I think it is difficult when creative decisions are made by the Committee and it is difficult when creative decisions are made by people who don’t even watch movies or know anything about it, and this tends to be what is happening a lot.”
He didn’t stop there. Johnson continued to call the infinite cycle of the remake sector and restart:
“When something is fine, the studies want to continue like this in order to redo the same things, but humans don’t want it. They want fresh, they want to hear new things, experiment with new things, seeing new things, so I don’t know, I imagine that it’s all a little a disaster at this moment, right?”
Johnson’s frustrations are not new, especially in the wake of Madame Webwhich has submitted in a spectacular way, collecting only $ 43 million at national level and sitting with a painful 11% on the rotting tomatoes. Johnson clarified that while trying to bring something to the role, the final result was not exactly in his hands.
“It was not my fault. There is this thing that happens now when many creative decisions are taken by the committee. Or taken from people who do not have a creative bone in their body. And it is really difficult to do art in that way. Or do something fun in that way.”
And while some actors may try to smooth out things or dodge the fault, Johnson is not playing that game.
“I think that unfortunately with Madame Web, it started as something and turned into something else. And I was only a bit for the race at that point. But this happens. The biggest budget movies continuously fail.”
It is not the first time that it is vocal on the disconnection between Hollywood managers and real narration. Johnson previously clarified that the industry is making too much relying on algorithms and formulas rather than trusting artists and respecting the public:
“You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. My feeling has been for a long time that the audience is extremely intelligent and the managers have started to believe they are not. The public will always be able to smell the bullshit.”
Johnson’s comments echo to a wider frustration throughout the sector. While the studies cling to IP and safe bets, many creatives are rejecting, asking for something different. Something original. Something human.
