Neill Druckmann will not do the last part of us without the right idea

The last of us Franchising has become a cultural reference point. The franchise, launched first as a game in 2013 by Naughty Dog, became known for emotionally devastating narration, nuanced characters and brutal construction of the world.

But with The last part of us II Having tied many of his loose purposes, fans have a question on fire … there will never be a The Last of Us Part III?

Neil DruckmannCo-creator and director of the franchise, recently faced the possibility of a third video game on the podcast of the sacred symbols. Even if he has not confirmed that a third game is in progress, he didn’t even close the door. He said:

“So, if we never go back, I want to make sure it is a story worthy of the last of us. I love that world, I love these characters. With the right opportunity, with the right idea – yes, I would jump totally.”

Obviously it must be a worthy story. It is easy to understand why it is cautious. Among the games and the show, the story has already affected some strongly resonant notes.

In the first game (and season 1 of the series), we followed Joel and Ellie through a devastated America, culminating in Joel’s infamous decision to save Ellie from the fireflies by force, killing the only surgeon who could have saved the world.

The last part of us II (Now adapted through seasons 2 and 3 of the show) it resumes five years later, just to pieces everything. Joel’s violent past reaches him, Ellie begins a journey of revenge that turns into tragedy and, in the end, we get something that seemed to be the end.

Which makes Druckmann’s moderation refreshing. The creative temptation to revisit the loved characters is strong, especially when there is already a devoted audience. But the hesitation of Druckmann suggests that he is not interested in reconstructing the emotional rhythms or of squeezing more by a story that already said what he needed.

They could always tell a completely new story set in that world with different characters in a different position. It could be interesting.

What would you like to see from the franchise in the future?
