The directors of AVENGERS: ENDGAME reveal their original plan for the iconic “Portals” scene.

Avengers: EndgameThe “Portals” scene is one of the most iconic moments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The emotional weight of all those Marvel heroes joining the final battle against Thanos had audiences jumping off the sets and cheering.

But according to the co-director Joe Russothis sequence was almost drastically different and it took a battle in the editing room to bring it to life.

Speaking with Empire magazine, Russo shared that the original plan for the scene lacked the emotional impact that fans have come to love.

He said: “There’s probably been some debate about the most famous moment, I think, of all the Marvel movies, which is the portals that open up at the end of the movie.” Avengers: Endgame.”

Initially, the sequence had “the camera rotating around Steve Rogers and everyone gathered behind him.”

Russo was unhappy with this approach and explained, “I remember struggling with that thing in the editing room for months. I won’t say who was on which side, but that was a shredder. I remember [Anthony] and I said, ‘Fuck it, we’ll shoot it during filming.’”

The final version, with Sam Wilson’s Falcon saying “On your left” as a callback Captain America: The Winter Soldier before the portals opened was filmed during post-production.

Also Stephen McFeelyone of the film’s screenwriters, initially was satisfied with the first cut. He admitted, “I thought the first cut worked pretty well.”

However, McFeely acknowledged the strength of the Russos’ instincts, saying, “One of the lessons I learned from working with these guys and working with Marvel is that emotional logic trumps logic. It’s not a cop-out. That’s what the film wants. It’s what your audience wants.”

The decision to rework the portal scene paid off, delivering a thrilling and fantastic result that Marvel fans will never forget. Good luck to Marvel as they try to reach the same level in the next two Avengers films.

The Russo brothers will return to the MCU with Avengers: Judgment Day AND Avengers: Secret Wars with Robert Downey Jr. is trading in his Iron Man suit for a villainous turn as Doctor Doom.

Avengers: Judgment Day arrives in theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on May 7, 2027.
