Hidden in a recent Deadline report was news that Warner Bros. is developing new films The Goonies AND Gremlins movie. The article outlined the studio’s upcoming projects.
In addition to these classics, Warner Bros. also promotes films such as Clay face, Supergirl, Practical magicA Matrix followed, and The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum. With the return of these iconic properties.
There are no details regarding The Goonies project, but fans have been talking about it for years The Goonies sequel, only to be met with skepticism from the original cast.
Already in September, Martha Plimpton AND Corey Feldman they dismissed rumors of a sequel. Plimpton was particularly blunt, stating: “People, it doesn’t exist The Goonies 2 in the script, there is no one ‘connected’, Spielberg doesn’t direct, it’s not real.”
Also Steven Spielbergthe executive producer of the original film, addressed sequel speculation. During The Goonies meeting hosted by Josh GadSpielberg shared:
“Chris [Columbus] and Dick [Richard Donner] and I and Lauren [Shuler Donner] we talked about it a lot and every two years we come up with an idea, but then it doesn’t hold up.
“The problem is the bar you all have raised on this genre. I don’t think we’ve successfully come up with a better idea than The Goonies we made in the 1980s.”
The last serious attempt came from The Goldbergs Creator Adam F. Goldbergwho was pitched an idea for the sequel Richard Donner before his passing.
Unfortunately, this effort never moved forward. With the latest announcement, it’s unclear whether Warner Bros. is pursuing a direct sequel, a reboot, or something completely different. At this time, no creative team or cast members have been confirmed.
THE Gremlins The revival is planned as a true third installment rather than a reboot set 30 years after the events of the original film, continuing the mischievous and monstrous adventures.
Harry Potter director Chris Colombo has been linked to the project for years, with Carl Ellsworth contributing a “twisted and dark script”.
Columbus has been vocal about maintaining the spirit of the original films, and assured fans that the production will stick to practical effects over CGI: “We’re going old school with puppets and animatronics. No CGI for the gremlins.”
While the timeline for Gremlins 3 remains uncertain, it looks like it will happen again.
Warner Bros.” decision to revisit The Goonies AND Gremlins comes with mixed feelings. While these properties are beloved and have a place in pop culture, they come with high expectations.
What are your thoughts? Are you excited to see these classics return or do you think some stories are better left in the past?
