Director James Mangold (Logan, Ford-Ferrari) shared new details about his upcoming release Swamp thing film for DC Studios.
Mangold shared in a recent interview with MovieWeb that he’s approaching the project as a “stand-alone” gothic horror tale, distinct from the larger interconnected planes of the DC Universe.
Mangold is trying to create something new with his film Swamp Thing, and when talking about it he said:
“Swamp Thing at DC, it’s just a question of: do we find a way on the page to say something original? While I’m sure DC sees Swamp Thing as a franchise, I would see it as a very simple, clean, gothic horror film about this man/monster. I’m just doing my own thing with this, just a standalone.
I like the idea of an autonomous, rooted and gritty approach Swamp thing. It’s okay to make comic book movies that are independent, that don’t have to connect to a larger universe. This is something I’d like to see both Marvel and DC do more of.
Gunn has already mentioned the flexibility of the DC Studios film schedule, therefore a standalone film Swamp thing could still pave the way for future projects like Dark Justice League.
The director also spoke of his ability to move fluidly between genres, and highlighted this as one of the strengths of his cinema. He said:
“Part of the joy is that you learn a lot when you change genre or language in how you communicate in your art. I’ve learned a lot, whether it’s making an action movie, whether it’s making a Western and bringing those energies into some sort of superhero movie or Marvel movie.
He went on to say, “Not only do you learn things by creating a genre, but then you learn how to transfer lessons from that genre to another that you might not expect.”
I’m just excited to see how Mangold will try to explore the dark and disturbing world of Swamp Thing.
The director previously said that he had no intention of building a cinematic universe for Swamp Thing, but just had a story he wanted to tell. He compared it to RoboCop,:
“It’s no different from what others say to me; I have no plan for a universe, I’m not building someone to join in some future.
“Get busy, but I’d just be interested in telling it, I’ve always been interested in doing a version of Frankenstein, basically, and, yet, I feel, ‘He’s alive!’ enough has been done, but Swamp Thing always came to mind as this wonderful version of the Frankenstein story, very similar to one of my favorite pop films growing up, RoboCopthe original one.
“This guy who wakes up and transforms, finds out he’s become a machine, that was also something that fascinated me with Logan, obviously.”
Mangold went on to say that he likes the idea of making Swamp Thing a “noir, mystery, horror film about a guy who wakes up and he’s this thing.” He added:
“There’s a kind of amnesia, ‘How did I get here and who did this to me?’ So I’m imagining a horror-noir film that follows a creature that can’t be seen, trying to reconstruct, starting from fragments of memories, what happened and who did it.
“And none of this goes against Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson and all the great work that’s been done… I’m just putting it in a new cinematic context, but it’s everything they were exploring in these comics and so beautifully .” .”
Plot details remain under wraps, but the film will explore the tragic origins of Swamp Thing and I’m sure the story will blend horror and humanity into a very evocative tale.
No release date has been announced yet, but with Mangold at the helm, Swamp thing will definitely bring something disturbingly fantastic to the DC Universe.
