Danny Boyle AND Alex Garland have teamed up again to return to the post-apocalyptic zombie universe 28 years later. Picking up decades after the events of 28 days laterthe sequel explores the consequences of the rabies virus in a fractured world.
Among the new characters introduced is Ralph Fiennes, who is talking about the role of Dr. Kelson, a character whose presence will shock and intrigue audiences.
Dr. Kelson’s introduction features a blood-streaked face and a menacing backdrop of a towering skull structure. His appearance raises immediate questions about what kind of character he is.
During an interview with Empire, Fiennes shared some details saying, “He’s a survivor, and how he survived is very interesting. He has a rather open view of the world.”
Fiennes goes on to suggest that first impressions may be misleading, saying, “I think the audience is going to assume something about him and then see where it goes.”
While Kelson’s role in 28 years later Importantly, the character’s story isn’t just contained in this first film. Fiennes confirms he will have a bigger role in the next film, Nia Da Costa’s 28 years later: the temple of boneswhich will be released in 2026.”
Boyle says, “He gets to the second film in a remarkable way, where the question of what he’s looking for and what he wants to do is completely resolved.”
28 years later stars Jodie Comer AND Aaron Taylor-Johnson as survivors living on a remote island, far from the infected. Their uneasy peace is shattered when they return to the mainland, facing the horrors of a resurgent Rage Virus.
The official synopsis teases: “Sometime after the events of 28 weeks laterthe Rage Virus has returned and a group of survivors must endure a world ravaged by hordes of infected.
Joining the cast are Jack O’Connell, Erin KellymanAND Ralph Fiennes. Fiennes described the emotional core of the film in a recent interview, saying:
“Britain has been in this terrible plague of infected people for 28 years… It centers on a boy who wants to find a doctor to help his dying mother. The drive through this beautiful land in the north of England, but obviously the infected are lurking everywhere.”
28 years later is the first of a planned trilogy, with the first and second installments already filmed. Boyle returned to direct the opening chapter, while Nia Da Costa (Candyman, The Wonders) directs the sequel.
The creative team uses the iPhone 15 Pro Max with specialized accessories for parts of the shoot.
28 years later arrives in theaters on June 20, 2025.
