Denis Villeneuve he is preparing to return to Arrakis Duna: Messiahthe third and final chapter of his adaptation of Frank Herbertit’s a science fiction epic. But the director made it clear: this will be his last trip to the dunes of Arrakis.
Speaking to The Wrap, Villeneuve reflected on the completion of Duna: second part and his decision to move forward Messiahsaying:
“When I saw the second part finished, I finally understood that it was over. I had done it. I had made an adaptation of it Dune. And that is something that is an incredible privilege.”
While Villeneuve initially expected to take a break from the franchise following its conclusion Part twohe couldn’t help but be brought back inside.
He explained: “I thought I’d like to write a few films or do a couple of things before I come back Duna: Messiah. But despite the images that kept coming back to me, my appetite is absolutely intact. This is the biggest surprise. I still want to go back to Arrakis.
Villeneuve continued to point this out Duna: Messiah will mark the end of his Dune trip, confirming: “Yes. Then it would become unhealthy.”
This isn’t the first time Villeneuve has let it be known that he will retire next Dune 3. Last year he mentioned the possibility of passing the baton to other directors.
He said: “I think it would be a good idea for me to make sure that, in Messiahthere are seeds in the project if someone wants to do something else later, because they are beautiful books.
“They are harder to adapt. They become more and more esoteric. It’s a little harder to adjust to, but I won’t close the door. I won’t do it alone, but it might happen with someone else.
It was previously reported that Warner Bros. was planning to move forward with at least one more film, with or without director Villeneuve, and it looks like they will be going without.
Villeneuve did a great job with this franchise, so it will be interesting to see another director attempt to continue what he started.
Duna: Messiah will be released on December 18, 2026.
