YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD SPIDER-MAN Producer talks about the show’s history and why Ned and MJ aren’t a part of it

The story that will be told in the Marvel/Disney+ series Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Manand how it fits into the MCU, has transformed since it was first announced.

It was initially advertised as canon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, telling a prequel to it Tom HollandThe story of Peter Parker before he entered the plot as we know it. But that idea was abandoned because it placed too many limitations on writers.

Now they’re moving towards a story that follows what would have happened if Peter’s mentor had been Harry Osborn instead of Tony Stark.

The executive producer of the show Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt gave fans some more details about the show in a recent appearance on The Official Marvel Podcast, saying:

“The idea was, ‘What happened during that time in the MCU, and what if things broke down one way or another with the Multiverse?’ There are a couple of different ways you can tell a Peter Parker and Spider-Man story.

“It starts with Peter in his first year. In the most recent Spider-Man films [with] Tom Holland let’s meet Peter [as a] in his second year, but what happens when he just enters school with all the new things that this entails?”

He went on to add context regarding when the show takes place:

“We’ll start at a point in the MCU where the Civil War has broken out, then the Sokovia Accords have been ratified, then we’re in the present day and then Peter gets to his first day in Midtown… then something happens that I’m going to experience to dance and our branch leaves. It’s a very recognizable world but Peter doesn’t end up going to Midtown.

He spoke about Peter’s friendships, adding:

“It’s a world where he’s never met Ned, he’s never met MJ. Who could he run into? Nico [Minoru] it’s perfect for Peter. She’s very different from Ned and they look so good together.”

It feels like it’s not MCU compliant at all, but more adjacent, for example The Batman It’s for James Gunn’s DCU. It looks like it’s going to be a fun show though.

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man follows Peter Parker on his journey to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike any we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.

The talented voice cast includes Hudson Thames, Colman Domingo, Eugene Byrd, Song of Grace, Zeno Robinson, Hugh Dancy AND Charlie Cox.

The head writer is Jeff Trammell and Mel Zwyer is the supervising director. Brad Winderbaum, Kevin Feige, Louis D’Esposito, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt and Trammell serve as executive producers.

Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man will debut on Disney+ on January 29, 2025.
