Doctor who boss Russell T. Davies has seriously built the hype by describing its upcoming spin-off series as “one of the greatest shows of [his] his entire career,” but there’s no rushing perfection, as Davies has warned it will take some time before it hits our screens.
With the 2024 Christmas special now upon us, showrunner Davies has provided fans with an update The war between land and seawhich was announced at Comic-Con, and is set to further expand the Whoniverse. Speaking to Doctor Who Magazine about the spin-off, Davies said:
“It’s my job to advertise, but the hype for that show is still far, far away – it’s far from broadcast.
“Here, right now, in the cold, dry downloads of a distant gaze, I can tell you… that it is one of the greatest shots of my life and one of the greatest performances of my entire career. You can doubt me and cry your eyes out… and stay behind. Oh my God, it’s beautiful!”
Filming on the five-part film began in August and will pick up with some familiar Doctor Who characters as they attempt to prevent a war involving the classic monsters, the Sea Devils – and it’s clear that Davies is excited about what’s to come.
The mysterious synopsis of the spin-off reads:
“When an ancient and fearsome species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing itself to humanity, an international crisis is ignited. With the entire population at risk, UNIT springs into action as land and sea declare war.”
Several cast members have been announced for the series so far, including Doctor Who former students Jemma Redgrave, Alexander Devrient AND Ruth Madeley reprising their original roles as UNIT Chief Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, UNIT staff member Colonel Ibrahim, and Science Advisor Shirley Anne Bingham.
