The Christmas box office offers a mixed bag of hits and misses with MUFASA, SONIC 3 and NOSFERATU

This holiday season, moviegoers flocked to theaters, offering a diverse collection of films. The Disney one Mufasa: The Lion King topped the box office, grossing $14.7 million on Christmas Day and pushing its domestic total to $64.3 million.

Globally, the Lion King the prequel has amassed an impressive $197.7 million, with $18.8 million of that coming from international markets on Wednesday. The film is on track to earn more than $50 million over the five-day holiday, cementing its status as a family favorite.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, Focus Features’ Nosferatu he made an excellent debut in second place. Directed by Robert Eggers (The witch, the lighthouse), the gothic horror film grossed $11.5 million on its opening day, attracting fans of Eggers’ signature atmospheric style.

With an inclusive cast Lily Rose Depp, Nicola HoultAND Willem Dafoe, Nosferatu faces high stakes with its $50 million budget. As a gory counter-programming option for the holidays, it will have to maintain its momentum to justify its budget.

Meanwhile, Paramount Sonic the Hedgehog 3 jumped to third place, earning $10.3 million on Wednesday. Although he ceded the weekend crown to Mufasathe film’s domestic total stands at a whopping $88 million.

With another sequel already approved for 2027, Paramount is confident in Blue Blur’s staying power, bolstered by the franchise’s roots in Sega’s iconic video game series.

In fourth place, A complete strangerSearchlight’s Bob Dylan biopic debuted with $7.2 million, with $1.4 million coming from previews on Tuesday.

Directed by James Mangold (Walk the line), the stars of the film Timothée Chalamet like the legendary musician. With an estimated budget of $60 million to $70 million, Oscar success and Chalamet’s rising star power could help him in the long run.

Rounding out the top five is Universal Evilwhich earned $5.4 million on Christmas Day. Since its pre-Thanksgiving release, the film has grossed $397.9 million domestically, cementing its place as one of the year’s biggest hits.

Beyond the top five, awards season is heating up. A24 has multiple contenders, including Girlan erotic drama starring Nicole Kidman, which grossed $1.5 million on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the historical epic of the studio The brutalist added $74,965 from six theaters, bringing its domestic total to $429,580.

Among the newcomers, Amazon MGM Studios’ The fire insidean inspirational sports drama about boxer Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, debuted with $1.7 million in 2,006 theaters.

As the year comes to a close, studios are counting on a mix of nostalgia, star power and critical acclaim to bring these films into 2024.
