First climate tipping point of no return recorded

An international team of scientists has recorded the first climate tipping point. According to researchers, our planet’s ecosystem has entered a phase of irreversible change, The Guardian reported.

The first alarm bell was the disappearance of coral reefs in warm water. It is known that since the beginning of 2023, more than 80 percent of reefs in 80 countries around the world have experienced the largest bleaching event in history.

“We can no longer view climate turning points as a hypothetical threat to the future; that threat has already occurred,” said Professor Tim Lenton of the University of Exeter.

The only way to protect coral reefs, researchers estimate, is to stabilize global temperatures by one point two degrees and then lower them by one degree.

By the way, we previously wrote that 96 percent of the world’s oceans are affected by extreme heat. Read more in our material.
