We’ve known this for years Mike Flanagan he wanted to make a Clayface movie for DC Studios and several months later he said he pitched him his idea James Gunn AND Pietro Safranthe film has received the official green light!
It was a pleasant surprise for many DC fans because Clayface is a really cool and interesting character and will be making his debut in Commando of creatures.
During a recent DC press event, Gunn was asked if he would greenlight Flanagan’s Clayface movie and he responded by saying:
“As I always say, it’s all about, ‘I want to make sure I have a script that works perfectly.’ This goes beyond anything else.
“So when Mike Flanagan comes along and says, ‘I had this idea for Clayface…’ I didn’t think about, ‘We’re going to do something with Clayface.’ But then he told me the idea he had, and the idea was really amazing.
“And I say, ‘Well, let’s give it a try. Let’s go write it!’ So he writes it and comes up with this amazing script. He was so passionate that I thought, “He could definitely fit in.”
“It’s just quality above all else. Then we have to ask ourselves, ‘How does this fit in with everything else?'”
Flanagan only wrote the screenplay for the film and, unfortunately, will not be directing the film as he will be working on his own Exorcist movie. So, DC Studios is now looking for a director.
Flanagan previously said he would be “really excited to do a stand-alone Clayface horror/thriller/tragedy movie.”
In another interview Flanagan talked about his initial meeting with the studio about Clayface being a horror movie, and that wasn’t the only DC movie they talked about. He said:
“I went to Warner Bros. to have the DC meeting. It was a general meeting with [producer] Jon Berg talking about if there was something in the DC Universe that I could be good for… I really want it[ed] to do Clayface.
“I came in and said, ‘You know, if you want to do some horror-oriented DC stuff, guys, I’ve got a great take on Clayface. I’d love to do that movie.’”
“And then if not, I wanted to talk about Scarecrow and Justice League Dark and Constantine. And I kind of threw it all out there and then said, “As a kid, I dressed up as Superman, because that was my hero – Christopher Reeve’s Superman was my hero.” And the meeting went nowhere. [Berg] I didn’t really get the hang of any of that stuff.
I love how Gunn handles all these DC projects and doesn’t greenlight them until the script is in perfect shooting condition. It’s an encouraging way to develop films, and I hope it works for them and that DC Studios produces one great film after another.
