First trailer and details on the story of KARATE KID: LEGENDS With Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio

Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Katarte Kid: Legends along with some photos and details about the film’s story that it brings together Ralph Macchio AND Jackie Chan joining as Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Han. Let’s see too Ben Wang showing off his impressive karate skills.

I was really curious to see this movie and excited to see what the story would entail and how it would tie in with the legacy of The Karate Kid franchise and Mr. Han is revealed to have ties to Mr. Miyagi. This looks like it will be a great addition to the franchise!

Wang takes on the role of Li Fong, a Beijing-based teenager who moves to New York with his mother (Ming-Na Wen). “The teenager’s transition to the Big Apple is, in a word, bitter: Li has trouble fitting in at his new school, and keeps getting dragged into fights he’d like to avoid.

“When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition, but his skills alone aren’t enough. Li’s kung fu teacher, Mr. Han (Chan), turns to the Original Karate for help Kid Daniel LaRusso (Macchio) and Li learn a new way to fight, fusing their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.”

Director Jonathan Entwistle teases LaRusso’s involvement by saying, “Without giving too much away, I can say that Mr. Han and Mr. Miyagi are the connection to Daniel.

“The Han family and the Miyagi family have been linked since ancient times. And there is a mention of this within the Karate Kid canon of the film for those people who want to look it up.

Speaking about the film’s New York setting, the director said: “It’s the idea of… in a classic Karate Kid meaning: fish out of water. Ben’s character Li is finding his way around the city and finds himself caught in the middle of something that will force him to stand up and fight.

“I was really excited about how can we make a character look like New York – not just visually, but how can he interact with how he feels and what he’s doing?

“We put it all together by shooting on location and built some pieces of New York [on soundstages]. There are many areas that really involve the Manhattan skyline and you see little hints of that in the film’s poster.

“It was important that there was a sense of getting some joy out of the action sequences, and fighting and training in the city really gives you that.”

As for the action sequence, he said, “We set out to make something that was both cinematic and action-packed. The fight sequences are really exciting. My hope is that when you’re sitting in that theater, you’re on the edge of your seat.”

Karate Kid: Legends will debut in theaters on Friday, May 30, 2025. Check out the trailer below and tell us what you think now!
