James Gunn says SUPERMAN will shoot a day and a half of footage “to enhance the film,” but there will be no reshoots

Director James Gunn he firmly believes that he will return to the set of his next film SupermanIt’s not for filming.

The writer-director recently confirmed on his Threads account that he will be shooting some “pickup footage.” Gunn is known to avoid filming his films as much as possible.

This is a rare feat given that he has directed major superhero tentpoles such as those of Marvel Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and DC The suicide squad. Filming is often a standard part of production on comic book tentpoles.

Gunn wrote on his Threads profile: “Sort of. Not a few days [of additional shooting]. We’ll do a day and a half of filming. No scene. No recovery. Just a handful of single shots to enhance the film.”

Gunn previously blocked a follower on Threads for making the suggestion Superman would need to spend a significant amount of time and money filming, writing: “I don’t know. I did a total of one day of shooting on my last two films combined.

A follower asked him how he reduces the need for reshoots, to which Gunn responded with six tips.

“1) Overpreparing,” Gunn replied. “2) Don’t start shooting until I have a finished script that the whole team will be happy with 3) Hire actors and department heads who I know can do their job 4) Surround me with people who will challenge me and not just yes- lord everything 5) I ask myself every day: are there little imperfections in the script or in what we’re shooting that might end up looking like huge imperfections once we cut the film together 6) 1 and 2 again!”

Elaborating on his third tip, Gunn wrote that “there is usually a long audition process” on his films to find the right actor. He also does “background checks, talking to people they’ve worked with before.”

Superman will be the protagonist David Corenswet in the title role, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane; Nicola Hoult as Lex Luthor; Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern; Isabela Mercede as Hawkgirl; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt/Mr. Terrific; Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen; María Gabriela de Faría in the role of Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampaioas Eva Teschmacher; AND Terence Rosemore as Otis.

Superman will launch the cinematic portion of DC Studios’ Gods and Monsters: Part 1. The theatrical release is scheduled for July 11, 2025.
