While Denis Villeneuve he talked about being inspired by Star Wars since it was one of his favorite films as a child, he has no desire to team up with Lucasfilm to direct a film in the franchise.
During an interview with The Town podcast, the director of Dune he said working on a Star Wars the film is not a dream of his because Return of the Jedi it derailed the franchise. That movie ruined everything for him.
He explained: “I was the target audience. I was 10 years old. It hit my brain like a silver bullet. I became obsessed with it Star WarsI intend, The Empire strikes again It’s the film I was looking forward to the most in my life. I’ve seen the movie a billion times on screen. I was traumatized by The Empire strikes again. I love it Star Wars.”
He went on to explain: “The problem is that everything derailed in 1983 with Return of the Jedi. It’s a long story. I was 15 and my best friend and I wanted to get in a cab and go to Los Angeles and talk to George Lucas – we were so angry! Even today, the Ewoks. It turned out to be a children’s comedy.
Villeneuve continues to support him afterwards Return of the JediTHE Star Wars the franchise “has crystallized in its own mythology, very dogmatic, it seemed like a recipe, with no more surprises. So I’m not dreaming of doing a Star Wars because it seems like the code is very hard coded.
When asked about the possibility of hiring Star Trekthe director said, “I’m not a Trekkie.”
The first Star Wars movie I ever saw was Return of the Jedi. I saw it at the Drive-In movie theater with my parents and I was 4 years old. I still remember watching that movie and being mesmerized by what I was watching. That’s my experience, anyway.
Villeneuve does not need to do a Star Wars films as he has worked on other major science fiction franchises such as Dune AND Blade Runner. The films he has made are great and I’m sure he will continue to make great films that fans will enjoy.
