Arcane co-creator and showrunner Cristiano Linke released a lengthy statement about season two after some fans criticized it for not feeling complete.
The answer also comes after Linke said that in “Arcane Afterglow” the Jayce/Viktor ending felt unresolved to him and they weren’t given the time they needed to flesh out that story more.
I said that Arcane could have had a third season, and I feel like the third season could have focused on the Jayce/Viktor arc.
Anyway, when fans started going wild with Linke’s comments, he shared the following statement on Reddit to clear things up.
“Some theories here are a little too far out.
“No, we did not ask Fortiche to produce a 1.5 hour final episode. It’s quite the opposite, our screenplays are always shorter than what Fortiche ends up proposing in the story board phase. We want to let them be inspired and wander free, so we can then take it back and also allow the magical moments to find themselves.
“This is a close creative collaboration, not some ‘good sales company, do your job, achieve the impossible, but do it fast!’ — I consider many people from Fortiche to be some of my closest friends. I find it disappointing that people suggest these things.
“No, we have not received pressure related to corporate greed or anything else.
“However, yes, there are always constraints, both budget and time. It’s part of our job as creatives, to work within these limitations. Constraints are NORMAL and have always been generous and I have always had the final say on anything creative. But they exist. They also existed during the first season.
“It would have been great to have more time to work on this second season, or extra time to add to the episodes, but we didn’t have that. For a number of reasons. The budget is one.
“We were EXTREMELY lucky to have these absolutely insane budgets from Riot to produce Arcane. We all feel incredibly lucky. NO ONE ELSE gets this kind of budget. Please don’t forget it.
“Time is the other constraint. There is a release window towards which many people are working, not only in Fortiche, but also in Riot on several games, in Netflix, brand partners.
“Even key talent working on the show who, simply put, are getting tired of dealing with this incredibly long season and projecting out over multiple years. Don’t forget that, at the end of the day, this is just a collective of human beings, of people.
“I suppose there is no other television show that has taken as long as Arcane to produce two seasons, without breaks. Arcane is unrivaled in terms of high-fidelity animation. I don’t want to use any of this as an excuse, but yes… this job requires a lot on a human level.
“Our second season is fantastic. We made you feel more than you ever have when watching animated characters.
“It’s not perfect. You don’t take these types of heavy swings and expect everything to wrap up perfectly with a neat bow tie. It grows and evolves in its own way and becomes what it becomes.
“Has any TV series ever managed to successfully land so many main characters, time travel, supernatural abilities, technological inventions, fantasy world stakes, high concepts, complex relationships and global expectations? I actually don’t know. I would be very curious to know if people think of any, so I can study them.
I understand why some fans are upset, but at the same time the creative team managed to tell a great story. I also understand why they could have expanded on some story elements. In the end, though. They had to tell the story they wanted to tell.
What do you think about how Arcane finished?
