In 2003, a very politically incorrect film titled On tiptoeand has a stellar cast that includes Matthew McConaughey, Kate Beckinsale, Patricia Arquette, Peter DinklageAND Gary Oldmann like a little person.
This movie was completely bonkers and the trailer makes it look like a fake movie, but this shit is real! It exists and it’s crazy that it exists!
McConaughey was recently a guest on the podcast 2 bears, 1 cave with comedians Tom Segura AND Bert Kreischerand the actor had never seen the trailer before, and his reaction to watching it for the first time is hilarious.
On tiptoe follows Steven, a firefighter, and Carol, an artist, who have a loving relationship until Carol unexpectedly becomes pregnant. Steven then reveals a long-kept secret: he comes from a family of little people, including his twin brother, Rolfe.
Carol must face her own prejudices and decide if she is ready to raise a child who may be born with dwarfism. The story focuses on the evolution of their relationship and Rolfe’s experience as a little person and explores family acceptance.
The film has become known for its approach to sensitive topics. Oldman controversially portrays Rolfe, Steven’s younger brother, by bending over and using camera tricks, which many people found offensive and disrespectful to the toddler community.
Despite the presence of several famous actors, the film’s clumsy handling of disability representation and family dynamics made it seem exploitative and politically incorrect.
The film has since become a cult curiosity because Hollywood actually produced a film like this.
You can watch McConaughey’s reaction to the trailer below, and I’ve also included the trailer for you to watch in case you’ve never seen it.
