Spoilers ahead for those of you who haven’t seen the season finale of The Penguin.
The Penguin the season finale ended in a very dark, shocking and heartbreaking way. That ending hurt because it involved the death of a character I really liked, a character who didn’t deserve to die the way he did.
Colin Ferrell recently spoke at a Q&A session following a screening of The Penguin finale at the Saban Media Center and during it, the actor described what it was like for the cast and crew on the evening of the series’ final shoot.
The last scene filmed was where Ferrell’s Oswald Cobb kills Victor Aguilar (Rhenzy Feliz). Feliz described the moment before his death “as perhaps the most vulnerable interaction between Oz and Victor in the entire series.”
After telling Oz that he is the closest thing to a family he has, Oz proceeds to strangle Vic to death. I hated watching it, and all the sympathy you had for Oz that had built up over the course of the series was thrown into the garbage disposal and blown to smithereens.
Ferrell explained of the scene: “It was really about getting that last bit of innocence. Someone who had given so much of his life, who had suffered so much loss and offered so much loyalty, so much love… it was to see that light go out from the person he had offered it all to.
The actor went on to talk about his hatred and respect for the way Victor’s arc ended and then said, “There was a dark energy that night.
“If you ask the audience to fall in love with the character, which I feel like the audience fell in love with Rhenzy’s Vic, there’s a world where the crew will fall in love with that character too.”
Deirdre O’ConnellThe actress who plays Oz’s mother, Francis Cobb, spoke about how the final page of the series’ final episode required her to shed a singular tear while lying in a vegetative state.
As for what went through her mind when she shot that scene, she said, “I don’t even know if she knew she was doing it and I don’t know how a human being could do it, but she withdrew her love. It was absolutely clear in the room that Oz portrayed his love and I felt it, and my blood ran cold. It brought me to tears.
Farrell continued, “He was so human and he was so relatable. It was painful but there was also beauty there.”
I get that this is where the story needed to go and that killing Vic is what would turn Oz completely to the dark side, but it was still hard to top.
