EGOT winner Whoopi Goldberg provided updates on the follow-up Sister act 3 for the past few years now, and while the film is still moving forward, a new update explains that some changes have been made.
While the film is still ongoing, despite his former co-star Maggie Smith who died at the age of 89 in September, the script is currently being rewritten to accommodate her character’s absence.
Goldberg explained Tonight’s show with Jimmy Fallon“We have to make some adjustments because we just lost Maggie Smith, as you know. And so, we will make it happen. We will. It’s simply a change.
Smith played Mother Superior Sister Act (1992) and its sequel Sister Act 2: Back to Habit (1993), both starring Goldberg as Deloris Van Cartier, a Las Vegas entertainer who goes into hiding as a nun after witnessing a mob hit.
While at the convent, she helps the sisters get their struggling choir back on its feet, later returning to teach a music class full of young outcasts (including Lauryn Hill, Jennifer Love Hewitt AND Alanna Ubach).
After years of negotiations for a third chapter, Disney has chosen Tim Federle direct and Madhuri Shekar as writer in 2021, with Goldberg set to reprise her role and produce alongside Tyler Perry and Tom Leonardis.
Goldberg had already offered Fallon a cameo in the upcoming threequel when she appeared Tonight’s show in 2022, noting that a script had been completed at that time.
The new film will also feature prominently Keke Palmerand is currently in pre-production.
