THE PENGUIN showrunner talks about Mark Strong’s Carmine Falcone and compares Sofia’s story to Rosemary Kennedy

The most recent episode of The Penguintitled “One Hundred Years,” it was storytelling of the highest order as it dove into Sofia Falcone’s past and revealed the truth behind the Executioner and Carmine Falcone’s role in Sofia’s imprisonment in Arkham Asylum.

Marco Forte took over the role of Carmine, previously played by Giovanni Turturro. Although the creative team wanted to bring Turturro back to the series, the actor’s schedule did not allow it.

As I speak with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Lauren LeFranc he explained: “Originally, did we want to be able to have John come back and be Carmine Falcone? Of course.

“John is a really talented actor and was great in the movie, but once we realized that his show wasn’t going to work for our show, it quickly became a question of who had that kind of gravitas and ferocity, which Mark Strong actually has.” .”

She added: “It was really exciting to see how those scenes played out because he was so central to Sofia’s story. We certainly wouldn’t have missed Carmine in our story. We very specifically mapped out Sofia’s arc so that intertwined with Carmine’s narrative arc”. , Also.”

Speaking about the recast and what Strong brought to the role, LeFranc said: “They’re a similar age, but a little younger. You’d have to ask Mark, but I think he looked at the portrayal and the accent.” [in The Batman].

“I keep using the word gravity, but it was very important that it had a presence, certainly with Sofia, that there was a hint of warmth, but also something very cold at its core. It seemed coherent to watch it. I felt like that was his father.”

As for Sofia’s story arc in this episode, LeFranc compares it to that of Rosemary Kennedy, President John F. Kennedy’s sister who was lobotomized at age 23 on her father’s orders.

He said: “It is unclear how mentally ill she was or whether she simply did things that they felt were inappropriate and made the Kennedys look bad.

“We are digging deeper into who [Sofia] is and why it is the way it is, but at the same time recognizing the flaws in our institutions, for example, and the power that some men hold over young women. Who has a voice and who doesn’t? Whose voice is silenced?”

I love this series so far and it will be interesting to see how the story continues to unfold and set up the future of The Batman franchising.
