Oscar winner Anne Hathaway confirmed that she will return to one of her first film franchises to reprise her role as Queen Amelia Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, aka Mia, in the long-awaited threequel, Princess Diaries 3: Miracles happen with Disney and Somewhere Pictures.
In a social media post, Hathaway posted a video of three cuts, first of her younger self as Mia Thermopolis, then of Julie Andrews while Queen Clarisse Renaldi both said, “Shut up!”, then raised three fingers and made the exclamation herself, and blew a kiss to the camera, while cutting the article confirming her and the director Adele Lim (Raya and the Last Dragon, Joy ride) were both on board.
Debra Martin Chase will produce The Princess Diaries 3. EPs include Lim’s producing partner Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack. Flora Greeson is writing the screenplay.
The first Princess Diaries the film arrived in 2001, and Hathaway’s role as teenager Mia Thermopolis, who discovers she is a princess, was a career turning point. The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement arrived in 2004 right after Hathaway appeared in the film adaptation of She is enchanted the same year.
No other cast members have been confirmed to return, but the film wouldn’t be complete without Julie Andrews, so let’s hope for confirmation soon.
