James Wan has called in a writer to develop the script for his reboot of Creature from the Black Lagoon for Universal Pictures.
The script will be written by Sean Tretta, who has previously worked on shows such as Maya MC AND Star Trek: Picard. That screenplay will be based on a treatment written by Wan, Raffaele Giordano AND Bryan Coyne.
This version of the classic story is said to be a “modernized, grounded retelling that leans into visceral horror while still respecting the original classic.”
Creature from the Black Lagoon was published in 1954 and the story follows a group of scientists who discover a prehistoric amphibious humanoid creature in the Amazon jungle.
While exploring a remote lagoon, the team, led by Dr. David Reed, becomes fascinated by the creature, nicknamed Gill-man. As they attempt to capture and study it, the creature becomes aggressive, feeling threatened by intruders into its territory.
The scientists find themselves having to fight for survival against the wrath of the creature.
Wan is also producing the film under his Atomic Monster banner with Atomic Monster’s Michele Chiara AND Judson Scott executive production.
