This week’s retro trailer is for the 1981 film The Monster Cluba British horror comedy anthology film directed by Roy Ward Bakerbased on the author’s works R. Chetwynd-Hayes.
The film is the protagonist Vincenzo Price as Eramus, a suave vampire, and Giovanni Carradine as Chetwynd-Hayes himself, a horror writer. After a meeting in which Eramus drinks some of the author’s blood, he invites him to the “Monster Club”, a secret gathering place for supernatural creatures such as vampires, werewolves, and demons.
The club is full of eccentric monsters who like to dance and listen to music, but the highlight of the evening is Eramus’ story. Throughout the night, he shares three disturbing and disturbing monster stories, each with their own moral twist, involving ghouls, shapeshifters, and human-monster hybrids.
The first story, “The Shadmock”, revolves around a shy, lonely man with deadly powers who becomes obsessed with a young woman.
The second story, “The Vampires,” offers a unique twist on the vampire genre, following a family of vampires and their unexpected interactions with human society.
Finally, “The Ghouls” tells the disturbing story of a filmmaker who stumbles upon a city inhabited by flesh-eating demons.
Between these stories, scenes from the bizarre and hilarious Monster Club punctuate the film, blending campy horror with dark humor and ’80s nightclub music. Although not a box office success, The Monster Club It has since gained a cult following for its quirky tone and atmospheric storytelling.
