Netflix has announced that it will finally move forward with its Magic: The Gathering adaptation of the series. The project was first announced in 2019 and is now in production.
The series is being developed by showrunner Terry Matalas, who previously worked on Star Trek: Picard. Netflix also shared a sneak peek at the project above.
Netflix said: “It’s happening! Netflix’s animated series MAGIC: THE GATHERING is now in production with showrunner Terry Matalas in collaboration with Hasbro Entertainment and Wizards of the Coast.”
Matalas told Tudum, “Those new to this sprawling saga will discover what millions of fans who play every day already know. Magic is the ultimate storytelling sandbox, filled with iconic and complex characters, extraordinary and mind-blowing powers, and portals to every genre imaginable.
“It’s also a powerful reminder that no matter what culture, country, or plane of existence you come from, we can all come together and become heroes together.”
There isn’t much else to share, but more details will come over time as production on the series progresses.
What we do know is that the series will focus on the vast world of Magic: The Gathering and its Planeswalkers, described as “Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains as they confront stakes bigger than any other world can handle.”
Mark the rose waterlead designer on the series, has previously said, “I’m as big a fan of Magic as I’ve ever been. I have a huge emotional investment in the fact that it exists and that it’s good. We have a world-class team working on it… I think it’s something that will bring people who don’t know Magic to Magic, which is really exciting.”
The Russo brothers were initially involved in the project, but eventually dropped out.
Matalas is also currently developing Marvel WandaVision spin-off show Visionso he keeps himself busy!
