The highly anticipated second season of Apple TV+’s workplace sci-fi series Separation will finally arrive in January, three years after the first season released on the streamer.
The series was created by Danilo Ericksonwho co-writes the series, and the head director is Ben StillerThis week, Stiller and the show’s co-stars John Turturro sat down with Variety to reveal what fans can expect from season two and why waiting so long to release it has put extra pressure on the people making it.
Turturro, who plays businessman Irving in the series, said:
“I think it’s going to be a really interesting second season. We’re exploring the unknown that audiences are waiting for, and then we’re doing it gradually.”
For director and executive producer Ben Stiller, a three-year gap between seasons gives hope that these new episodes will live up to fans’ high expectations. He said he’s working on the second season of Separation:
“It’s an interesting experience. I’ve never been through that before: a second season of nothing. Everything I’ve done has been canceled in the past. But, you know, I feel like there’s an expectation that the audience has, that they should have if they love something. For us, it’s just been the process of trying to live up to our own expectations of what we think the show should be and committing to that.”
In the show, Adam Scott plays Mark Scout, an employee who works at a mysterious biotech company called Lumon.
This controversial company performs procedures in which employees’ psyches are bifurcated to separate work-related memories from personal ones, creating Innies (employees’ on-the-job personas) and Outties (their off-the-job personas).
Patricia Arquette plays the manager of the fired employees, as well as Mark’s neighbor. As the show progresses, Mark makes curious discoveries that call into question the company’s intentions. The rest of the cast includes Zach Cherry, Lower Britt, Tramell Tillman, by Jen Tullock, Says Lachman, Michael Chernus, John Turturro AND Christopher Walken.
New members joining the cast this season include Alia Shawkat, Gwendoline Christie, Merritt Wever, Bob Balaban, Robby Benson, Stefano Carannate, John Noble AND Ólafur Darri Ólafsson.
The synopsis for season two reads: “Mark (Scott) and his friends learn the dire consequences of failing to respect the barrier of separation, leading them further down a path of doom.”
The second season will consist of 10 episodes and will premiere on Apple TV+ on Friday, January 17. I can’t wait!
