The 1987 film Superman IV: The Quest for Peace era Dr. Christopher Reeves’ last film in which he played Clark Kent/Superman and, unfortunately, the film was not good.
It saddens me that the Superman franchise has turned into that mess of a movie. It’s a shame that the right creative people weren’t brought in to help steer the franchise in a better, stronger direction.
Jon’s Crywho played Lenny Luthor in the film, recently spoke openly about the film and explained why it ended up being a flop.
During a guest podcast, Off Duty: An NCIS Rewatch, the hosts talked to Cryer about how fun it is to “find someone who likes that piece of art that you thought was the most embarrassing thing you’ve ever done.”
Cryer continued to talk about A quest for peacesaying: “I made a film called Superman IVwhich was the last Superman movie that Christopher Reeve directed, and halfway through the movie they ran out of money, so that’s a disaster.
“If you look at the movie, they never finished the special effects, so they had to cut huge chunks of the movie and it doesn’t make any rational sense anymore.
“And I’m sad about it because I loved the [original] Superman movie. I was 14 years old when Superman it came out and I was the demo for that movie.”
Superman IV It was made after the producers of the original three films, Ilya Salkind and his father Alexandersold the film rights to the character to The Cannon Group, Inc. for $5 million, and the company had considered making Superman V While Superman IV was put together. But, of course, it didn’t work.
Due to the film’s failure, the Superman franchise was abandoned until its 2006 release. The Return of Supermanwhich represented the spiritual sequel to the first two films starring Christopher Reeve.
Cryer also spoke about his role in Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and how he was not satisfied with what he had done in the film.
He said: “I’m not good, by the way. Another thing I’m a little embarrassed about is that I made a very strong character choice that, in hindsight, didn’t work out.”
Cryer eventually returned to the Superman franchise years later taking on the role of Lex Luthor in the series Supergirl.
Superman IV: The Quest for Peace follows Superman as he takes a stand against nuclear weapons in an effort to rid the world of their threat. Troubled by the rising tensions of the Cold War, Superman decides to disarm the world’s nuclear arsenal by hurling it into the sun.
However, his plans are foiled when Lex Luthor creates a new villain, Nuclear Man, from a lock of Superman’s hair and radioactive energy. The two clash in a series of battles, with Superman fighting to stop Nuclear Man from wreaking havoc on Earth and to further his mission of achieving global peace.
If you’ve never seen the movie, you can watch it on Max.
