The boys is heading towards its explosive finale and showrunner Eric Kripke has finally revealed what fans can expect when the series returns for its fifth and final season on Prime Video.
While this will mark the end of the main story, the twisted superhero universe Kripke built isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
The next season 5 will officially close the main plot, but the spin-offs will please Vought on the rise AND The boys: Mexico they are already keeping the world alive. The former is currently in production, while the latter is still in development. Gen V has not yet been renewed for a third season, and Diabolical it was quietly cancelled.
In a recent interview with Variety, Kripke teased how he intends to lead The boys saga towards a meaningful conclusion.
“I would say we’re trying to land the plane on the core concerns of ‘The Boys, which are Butcher vs. Homelander; Hughie and Annie’s love story; Butcher and Hughie’s difficult big brother/little brother relationship – all the things that ‘The Boys’ is about, we’re trying to bring to a conclusion in a surprising and exciting way.”
Fans of Kripke’s work continue Supernatural will recall that he originally wanted the series to end after five seasons, and it’s clear that he’s bringing the same vision aimed at The boys.
As for the future of the franchise, Kripke confirmed it The boys: Mexico is “still in the works” and has shared some details about its progress.
“Gareth [Dunnet-Alcocer]who is an amazing writer, is writing drafts right now. It is under development. I think it’s funny. But we’ll see, it’s going through the bumpy rapids of development. It would have taken place at some point after the fifth season of ‘The Boys.'”
Of course, a big question fans have is whether the characters are from The boys they might appear in these new shows. Kripke didn’t close the door on that idea.
“Yes, that would be the hope, that there are some characters that we could cross paths with in the Mexico of ‘The Boys’ [spinoff]. But we’ll see.”
While the main story may have come to an end, this universe still has a lot of untapped potential and it will be interesting to see how it continues to expand.
Created by Eric Kripke and based on Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The boys grew well beyond the source material, often taking the story in new directions.
