Colin Farrell still hopes for SGT. ROCK is made and rejects criticism of James Gunn’s screenplay

Colin Farrell He’s not ready to let go yet Sergeant Rockeven though DC Studios has already done it. The long-developed war film was officially shelved earlier this year, but Farrell’s recent comments suggest he still believes the project deserves to see the light of day, and his praise for the script directly contradicts James GunnIt’s not such a flattering view.

Back in May, word spread that DC Studios had pulled the plug Sergeant Rocka film that was once expected to begin production in 2026 below Luca Guadagninothe direction. The director, known for Call me by your name AND Bones and allI quickly moved on to another project, Artificialleaving fans wondering what went wrong.

Behind the scenes, there were reportedly several factors including Guadagnino’s limited experience with large-scale blockbuster films, the unpredictable climate in the UK where filming was planned, and DC’s growing reputation for cost-cutting under James Gunn and Peter Safran.

The first talks focused on Daniel Craig taking the lead, but when the studio switched to Farrell, some speculated it was simply a matter of budget.

During a new interview on The Happy Sad Confused podcast, Farrell shared his thoughts on where things stand:

“God, that was a great script. I wonder what will become of her.”

When asked if he would have remained involved without Guadagnino attached, he said:

“I don’t know anything about it, brother. I’ve been meaning to do it with Luca. We’ve talked about it a couple of times and had some nice chats. I have no idea where it is now, but it should get made. It’s really, really cool. There’s some wonderful stuff in it.”

This is a brilliant endorsement, and not in line with Gunn’s assessment. The DC Studios co-CEO previously shared a much darker take on the script Justin Kuritzkessaying:

“Even after the third draft, Sgt. Rock didn’t change or get better. He stayed in the same place. And I said, ‘We can’t make this movie. We can’t. It’s not good.’

“We know it’s not good.” Just because we have a good director and a good screenwriter doesn’t mean the script works.”

Gunn went on to explain why he ultimately abandoned the project:

“Everyone will be upset at the end. It’ll come out, the movie won’t be good. The director will look bad, the screenwriter will look bad and we’ll look bad. So I don’t want that to be the case. We’re not going to make the movie. And so we killed it.”

Farrell’s comments make it clear that he does not share this sentiment. Although he is no longer involved with the film, his enthusiasm for the story, which would follow Sgt. Rock, Mademoiselle Marie and Easy Company as they fight the Nazis to recover the legendary Spear of Destiny, proves that there was something about the project that connected him.

As of now, Sergeant Rock It’s not moving forward. He was once expected to join Supergirl AND Clay face as part of DC’s 2026 schedule, but it looks set to remain in development limbo, at least for now.

If Sergeant Rock Whether he’ll ever get another chance remains to be seen, but hearing Farrell continue to support him, even after DC’s leadership buried him, makes you wonder if there’s still a spark worth rekindling in the trenches.
