Studio Ghibli’s touching 1988 animated film Tomb of the Fireflies is coming to Netflix next month and they’ve released a trailer to promote the release.
The film was directed by Isao Takahata and the story is set in Japan during the final months of World War II and tells the harrowing experiences of two brothers, Seita and his younger sister Setsuko, who struggle to survive the devastation of war.
The film explores the brutal reality of war, the loss of family, and the innocence of childhood lost in the face of overwhelming tragedy.
Through its powerful storytelling and stunning animation, the film paints a harrowing picture of the human cost of conflict, with an emphasis on the resilience and fragility of the human spirit.
The film has emotional depth as it offers an unflinching portrayal of the effects of war on civilians, especially children. Unlike other war films, Grave of the Fireflies focuses on the personal and emotional impact of the conflict rather than the battlefield.
The relationship between Seita and Setsuko is the focus of the film, which focuses on their bond and the lengths Seita goes to protect his sister despite increasingly dire circumstances.
This is a beautifully made film that leaves a lasting impression. If you’ve never seen it, it’s worth a watch!
