Along with the numerous Wingspan expansions and the new Wyrmspan game, it’s hard to imagine any more content for this series/style of board game. However, Stonemaier recently released a new card set for Wingspan that uses alternate fan-made art for various cards. While many of the art is quite beautiful and very unique, the set itself feels strangely arbitrary and extremely niche.
The set includes 300 cards that will replace current cards from different Wingspan expansions. This means that players will need to examine and remove each corresponding bird card and replace it with the new art card.
It was extremely boring and I would have preferred to have a set of alternate art cards just for the base game or other specific expansions, instead of random cards from all sets or alternate art for all of them.
Considering the wide variety of illustrations, the unique styles, some side illustrations for cards turned horizontally, and the images that take up the entire card, this is a great addition to the game as a whole.
I was impressed with how many there were at the beginning because they are all fanart creations that include a replacement text at the bottom of the cards that describes the artist a bit or something else funny. Also, it’s quite amazing to see the different mediums of art.
Styles include pencil drawings, paintings, woodwork, crochet, children’s art, watercolors and more, all the way up to high-quality professional art. I was genuinely impressed with the art and love seeing it while playing.
That said, this set of alternate art cards seems to be in a weird situation. Players who own all the expansions can take it and swap out the alternate art (which is terribly annoying), but then you’re left with a pile of useless cards and the new cards don’t add anything to the actual gameplay.
It also doesn’t come with its Wingspan base game components, so it can’t be a standalone purchase. Also, since it’s an all-set card, people can get random cards from other sets that they don’t actually own yet.
This all culminates in me trying to find a real reason to own it, because it’s like a cosmetic addition that’s way more complicated and confusing than it needs to be. Too much for casual gamers and not enough for hardcore fans. However, the product itself is pretty awesome and really looks great.
I think this is something that’s only interesting for specific Wingspan fans who want to shake things up on a very specific level.
