michelle keaton AND Tim Burton’s World have been long-time collaborators, starting in 1988 with Beetle Juicewhich leads directly to the success of 1989 Batmanthen his entourage, Batman Returns (1992).
They reunited with Disney’s 2019 live-action remake, Dumboand we are about to see their latest collaboration with the sequel, Beetle Juice Beetle Juicein theaters next weekend.
Keaton has only wonderful things to say about the director, but feels he hasn’t reached his potential in any of his films and fears he’s let Burton down.
During a recent interview with the pair, Keaton shared with The New York Times that he regrets his performance in DumboThe Oscar nominee played a greedy amusement park owner in the film alongside a cast that included Colin Farrell, Eva Green AND Danny DeVito.
The film received mixed reviews from critics and was considered a financial disappointment for Disney, grossing just over $350 million at the worldwide box office.
“I love working with Tim, but I don’t think we’ve ever really explored why we work so well together; we just do it,” Keaton told the Times. “I think I let him down in one movie, but that’s just me, and it still bothers me to this day. I had no idea about ‘Dumbo.’ I sucked in ‘Dumbo.'”
Burton joined Keaton in the Times interview and interjected, “I don’t even know what you’re talking about, but whatever.”
Neither the actor nor the director were shy about expressing their disappointment with how the film turned out. Keaton made sure to clarify that he would not return to do another project with Disney in the future, and it wouldn’t surprise anyone if Burton felt the same way.
I didn’t think so Dumbo It was the worst Disney film, or even the worst live-action remake, but it was certainly the weakest of the Keaton/Burton films.
