Robert Downey Jr. Says Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man Convinced Him to Play Iron Man

After experimenting by Robert Downey Jr. like Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s really hard to imagine anyone else playing that role. He was perfect for this character and it’s like he just became Tony Stark.

Mr. Jon Favreau knew Downey Jr. was the actor to play the role and fought to get that casting done. When deciding whether he wanted to take the role, Downey Jr. said he was actually inspired by Tobey Maguire AND Sam RaimiSpider-Man will take over the role of Iron Man.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Downey Jr. talked about the impact Maguire’s Spider-Man had on him before landing the life- and career-changing role.

Referring to comic book movies of the past, the actor said: “I saw in real time how difficult they were. [I saw] how rewarding they could be and how popular they were becoming.”

Downey Jr. also spoke about his journey just before Marvel came along, saying, “I’d been clean long enough… hungry even longer and I could feel it. [the] the obsession with manifesting the best version of myself comes back to bite me.

“Oddly enough, I was strength training furiously six times a week before I even realized it. [this role] It was coming, and my therapist told me, “Start acting like something big is about to happen and get ready.”

After sacrificing his life in Avengers: Endgame To save the universe, Downey Jr. will return to the MCU, but this time he’ll be playing a very different role: he’ll be playing the big, bad Doctor Doom, and it will be interesting to see exactly how they attempt to pull off that.
