Alien: Romulus director Faith Alvarez tackled a big cameo in the film that was one of the big nods to the new film’s franchise. Spoilers ahead!
The film includes an android character named Rook, but he was the same model as Ash from the original Alien film starring the deceased Ian Holm.
Alvarez and producer Ridley Scott he decided to reintroduce this android model in the film because he is the one who started it all.
Alvarez confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly: “There’s only a limited amount of synthetics, and that’s why some of them come back multiple times.
“So we were talking, and Ridley and I thought the one that never came back was the best of all, the original model played by Ian Holm.”
In the film, as he walks through the space station Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and his synthetic brother find a half-destroyed android that resembles Ash.
Alvarez confirmed: “It’s a different android, but it’s the same consciousness of Mother that has transferred from one android to another.”
The production team first had to contact Holm’s estate to bring the character back, and Alvarez said of Holm’s widow, “She felt like Hollywood had ignored Ian in the last few years of his life. So she was thrilled to have him back.”
It was nice to see the character return, but my biggest complaint about the movie was the visual effects used to bring him back as Rook. Those effects weren’t very well done, they looked very cheap. They could have done a much better job than they did.
What did you think of bringing this android back for? Alien: Romulus?
